Privacy notice

Your information, in plain language.

How Veriqa handles the personal information used to verify identity, and what you can ask of us.

The short version

  • We use your ID document, a short selfie video and some device details to help an organisation confirm that you are who you say you are.
  • Images are encrypted when stored and deleted after a set retention period.
  • Veriqa gives a recommendation. A person at the organisation makes the final decision.
  • We don't sell your information, and this website uses no cookies or trackers.

Who we are

Veriqa provides identity verification for South African organisations, such as letting agents, home-services platforms and lenders. When an organisation asks you to verify with Veriqa, you'll see their name on the verification page.

In most cases that organisation decides why your information is needed, and Veriqa processes it on their behalf. Their own privacy notice also applies, so you can ask them how they use the result.

What we collect during a verification

  • Your ID document: photos of your smart ID card, green ID book or passport, and the details read from it, such as your name, ID number and date of birth.
  • A short selfie video: recorded while you follow prompts on screen, plus still frames taken from it.
  • A "tilt your card" clip in some cases, so the hologram and reflections can be checked.
  • Results: the face match score, the outcome and the reasons for it.
  • Device and network details: your IP address and approximate location, network type, time zone and basic browser details. These help spot fraud, such as automated attempts.

We only use your device's camera while you are on the verification page and only with your permission. You can't upload files: everything is captured live.

Why we use it

To help the organisation confirm your identity and prevent fraud and impersonation, and to keep our service secure and working properly. We don't use your images to advertise to you, and we don't sell your information.

How decisions are made

Veriqa's checks produce a recommendation of Approved, Declined or Review, with the reasons written in plain language. A person at the organisation makes the final decision. If you think a result is wrong, ask the organisation to review it; you can also contact us.

How we protect it and how long we keep it

ID images and selfie videos are encrypted when stored, and access is limited to people and systems that need it. Images are deleted after a set retention period, and an organisation can ask for them to be erased sooner. Some records, such as the outcome of a verification, may be kept longer where the organisation needs them or the law requires it.

No system is perfectly secure, but we take care to protect your information and will act quickly if something goes wrong, including telling the people affected where the law requires it.

Who can see it

  • The organisation that asked you to verify.
  • A small number of Veriqa staff, when needed for support, security or to fix a problem.
  • Service providers who host or run our systems for us, under agreements that require them to protect it.
  • Authorities, only where the law requires us to share it.

Your rights

Under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) you can ask to see the personal information held about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, and object to how it is used. Start with the organisation that asked you to verify, or email us and we'll help or pass your request on.

If you're not happy with how your information has been handled, you can complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa).
